HR Certification is a great way to demonstrate your knowledge and experience in human resources, but does it necessarily equate to greater pay and career advancement opportunities? The data about how much an HR credential impacts salary and seniority have been absent, until now. A recent salary survey and report offers HR professionals more information about the benefits of credentials. According to the study, HR certification may not only make you more appealing to employers but may be an investment that pays off with better opportunities and earnings potential. Climbing the HR ladder. The study evaluated 10 different certifications held by more than 102,000 respondents with HR job titles and revealed that 34.2% of the respondents had at least one credential. The largest represented certifications were PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP. The higher the level the HR professional, the greater the percentage of those were credential holders: 35.5% of HR Managers and 51.1% of Vice Presidents of HR are credentialed. And if you’re already HR certified? Does it make sense to pursue multiple certifications? Multiple certifications among HR professionals are not as uncommon as you might at first suspect. The study found that 50% of SHRM-CP professionals also have a PHR certification, whereas 62.5% of SHRM-SCP also hold a SPHR certification. According to PIHRA member and certification prep course instructor Richard Dawson, MBA, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, PHRca, HRPM — his HR certification has both afforded career opportunities and increased salary levels throughout his career. Increasing your earning potential. In terms of seeing a boost in pay, there are several contributing factors including type of credential, industry, work location and job level. Compared to their peers without certification, professionals with SHRM-SCP might see a 5.7% pay boost and those with SPHR credential saw 9.6% pay boost. Over the last 10 years, earning certification has become increasingly valuable to HR professionals in both pay and career advancement. With one exception, all certification types demonstrated evidence of a boost in pay for those professionals who were credentialed. If you’ve ever browsed the HR Certification Institute’s (HRCI) and the Society for Human Resource Management’s (SHRM) available certifications and wondered what they’re all about, you’re in the right place to find out. More and more HR professionals are seeking certification every year, and you’ve probably seen offers for recertification credits paired with HR industry events like our own HR Virtual Summit. Hopefully, this article will eliminate any confusion by going over what HR certifications are available, why they’re useful, and which one you should get. We’ve included a list of HR certifications below, but let’s get started with who should be looking at HR certification in the first place. HR Certification Is for Beginners as Well as Veterans. While an HR certificate has never been a requirement to work in human resources, certification can be a valuable addition to your HR career even if you’ve been practicing HR since the Stone Age. Especially for beginners, HR certification offers multiple benefits from both an educational and a professional perspective. But even for those with years (or decades) of HR experience, HR certification can help you by testing your understanding, catching you up on the latest best practices, and freshening up your resume to future-proof your career—not to mention networking opportunities galore. Let’s dig into the details. Why Should You Get an HR Certification? In 2018, Payscale reported that 34 percent of all HR professionals have at least one HR certification. And it makes sense that so many would want to be certified when HR professionals with certifications are reported to receive more promotions and achieve career success more quickly. “Certifications are really helpful for people breaking into HR,” says JD Conway, head of talent acquisition at BambooHR. “They can help prove that you have a good knowledge base and can help show businesses that you know what you’re doing. They are a great way to supplement your education and make sure you know your stuff.” When you’re looking for human resources jobs, many open positions will often include SHRM-CP or PHR as a “strong plus” or say, “Certifications for Human Resource Professionals preferred,” but they are rarely a strict requirement. While it may not be a make-it-or-break-it element for most HR jobs, it will give you a boost against the competition and show a recruiter that you’re serious about your career in human resources. Even if you already have a job in HR, obtaining an HR certification can still be worth the expense and effort when it comes time to ask for a raise. Back in 2008, having an HR certification was associated with a 17 percent higher pay than someone without a certification. But in 2018, that percentage rocketed up to 31.6 percent. Maybe you already have a great HR job, but you’re looking for a promotion to a senior or management role. HR certification is one way to prove you have the knowledge and skills to move up in your career, and can increase your chances of getting a promotion by 29 percent. While there’s evidence that an HR certification can benefit your career, not every HR professional needs to rush out to get one. If you have an undergraduate or master’s degree in human resources, that should give you the credentials you need to start your career. Reconsider a certification later in your career when you’re looking to refresh your knowledge. Similarly, those in specialized HR positions may find certification unnecessary. HR certifications are mostly geared towards HR generalists, so if you are, for example, a benefits specialist, you might find many HR certifications too broad. What Types of HR Certifications Are There? The two most common and arguably the top HR certification providers for HR professionals are HRCI and SHRM. Each of them offers different types of HR certifications to help train HR pros on additional skills and further their careers. There are certifications available for every level of experience, but all require an exam administered through the certification provider. The following list of HR certifications isn’t exhaustive, but again, they’re the ones you’re most likely to see other HR pros appending to their names. HRCI HR Certifications. The HR Certification Institute offers eight different credentials, but the two most commonly seen after people’s names are the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). According to the HRCI website, the organization has issued over 500,000 HRIS certifications in over 125,000 countries during their past 40 years of operation. HRCI has been around since 1976 and is accredited by The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Their full list of available HR certifications includes: Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR). This certification is designed for beginner HR professionals who are just getting started, and as such, it doesn’t require any previous HR experience. An aPHR is geared towards college students planning careers in human resources, so it places a strong emphasis on basic skills and HR knowledge like HR operations, recruitment and selection, compensation and benefits, human resources and retention, employee relations, and health, safety, and security. If you’re an HR beginner, this certification is probably your starting point. Learn about why is HR so important! Download Now Associate Professional in Human Resources – International (aPHRI). Similar to the aPHR, the aPHRI does not require previous experience and is intended for people starting out in the HR field. If you work outside the United States or with a company who predominantly does business outside the U.S., this is the correct certification for you. An aPHRI covers the same information as an aPHR while excluding guidelines specific to the U.S. Professional in Human Resources (PHR). This is considered an advanced certification and is meant to indicate skills in technical and operational aspects of HR management. To be eligible for the PHR, you must already have one of the following combinations of experience: one year of experience in a professional-level HR position and a master’s degree or higher, two years or longer experience in a professional-level HR position and a bachelor’s degree, or at least four years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a high school diploma. This certification focuses on employee labor relations, business management, talent planning and acquisition, total rewards, and learning and development. Professional in Human Resources – California (PHRca). If you are an HR professional in California (or work for a company that predominantly serves California), this certification will help you specialize in laws, regulations, and practices unique to the state of California. The PHRca has all of the same prerequisites as the PHR, and will help you gain knowledge in employment and employee relations, compensation wage and hour, benefits and leaves of absence, health, safety, and workers’ compensation specific to the Golden State. Professional in Human Resources – International (PHRi). The differences between the PHR and PHRI are similar to the distinction between the aPHR and the aPHRi. The eligibility requirements are the same as for a PHR, but the exam and credentials are instead focused on working in an international setting. This certification will require you to have an understanding of talent acquisition, HR administration and shared services, talent management and development, compensation, benefits, work experience, employee relations and risk management, and HR information management. Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). If you are looking to move into a manager position in your HR department or want to take on responsibilities relating to strategy rather than implementation, this is the correct certification for you. To qualify for this certification, you must meet one of the following sets of criteria: at least four years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a master’s degree or higher, at least five years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a bachelor’s degree, or at least seven years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a high school diploma. The topics on the SPHR certification exam will have you studying up on leadership and strategy, employee relations and engagement, talent planning and acquisition, learning and development, and total rewards. A SPHRi certification will help show that you know your stuff when it comes to being a leader in the HR industry in the international space. This certification has all of the same eligibility requirements as an SPHR but instead focuses on business leadership, talent development and management, HR service delivery, and measurement and analytics. Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR). This certification is intended for HR professionals working in a global marketplace who have a role that supports organizational growth on a global level. Eligibility for this HR certification requires one of the following combinations: at least two years of experience in a global professional-level HR position and a master’s degree or higher, at least three years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a bachelor’s degree, or at least four years of experience in a professional-level HR position. This certification helps prepare you for strategic HR management, talent and organizational development, global talent acquisition and mobility, global compensation and benefits, and workforce relations and risk management. SHRM HR Certifications. The Society for Human Resource Management, or SHRM, is an HR membership organization that has a more limited but still prestigious offering of HR certifications. HRCI used to administer their certifications via SHRM, but in 2014 SHRM created their own certification program. While SHRM doesn’t offer a specific HR certification for beginners like the aPHR from HRCI, according to the SHRM website, more than 5,000 employees seek out SHRM certifications each month—so they’re definitely going strong. SHRM offers this list of competency-based HR certifications: SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP). This certification is intended for HR professionals involved in policy and strategy implementation who deliver and perform operational HR functions. You may qualify for this certification in one of the following ways: that you are working on an HR-related bachelor’s degree and have three years in an HR role, are working on a non-HR related degree and have four years experience in an HR role, have an HR-related bachelor’s degree and one year in an HR role, have a non-HR degree and two years in an HR role, have a graduate degree in an HR-related field and be currently working in HR, or have a non-HR-related degree and one year in an HR role. SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP). SHRM-SCPs benefit HR professionals whose focus is helping develop strategies, leading an HR department, and contributing to organizational goals. Eligibility for this HR certification requires one of the following: that you are working on an HR-related degree and have six years in an HR role, are working on a non-HR related degree and have seven years in an HR role, have an HR-related bachelor’s degree and four years in HR, have a non-HR bachelor’s degree and five years in HR, have a graduate HR-related degree and three years in HR, or have a non-HR graduate degree and four years in HR. Your timeline will be highly dependent on which certification you’re hoping to get, how much time you have to dedicate to studying, and when the certification test is available in your area. Both HRCI and SHRM have study resources available for purchase on their websites. But if self-guided study isn’t the best method for you, you can find both classroom and online courses to help you prepare for your certification exam. The HRCI has a list of HR certification preparation providers, and SHRM offers its own three-day educational program that travels to different cities throughout the year, as well as a list of SHRM-approved education partners. You will need to apply to take either an HRCI or SHRM certification exam so you can prove you meet all the prerequisites. HRCI exams are available at Pearson Vue testing centers; you can schedule your exam appointment online or over the phone via their website. For SHRM, you must apply for  a certification exam during a specific window. Once you’ve received an Authorization to Test email from SHRM, you can schedule your test via Prometric. How Much Do HR Certifications Cost? Especially for beginners seeking HR certification, cost can be a barrier to entry. You’re going to spend a pretty penny to get your HR certification, but the hope is that the cash you spend up front will pay off in the long run with a higher salary and better job prospects. The following list of HR certification costs is current as of 2021, but remember, this is simply for the application and exam; it doesn’t include additional costs like course materials. HRCI Certification Costs. aPHR $400 aPHRI $400 PHR $495 PHRca $495 PHRi $495 SPHR $595 SPHRi $595 GPHR $595 SHRC Certification Costs. SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP With an SHRM membership $350 Without an SHRM membership $450 A SHRM membership costs $209 a year, $95 a year for a SHRM Global Online Membership, or $40 a year for a SHRM Student Membership. If budget is a concern, there are ways to cut down on the additional costs of HR certification—we found some great advice in this post. Remember, if you’re already employed in HR, it can reflect well on a company if their HR professionals are HR certified, so some organizations may even reimburse you for the cost of an exam or provide bonus incentives for being certified. So while the initial cost can be steep, it might be a good idea to discuss options like these with your company. How Do You Choose Which Certification to Get? The first question you should ask yourself is why you want to get certified. If you’re a beginner, knowing which HR certification to pursue will depend on what you want from your career path and what sort of education and experience you’ve already invested in—the prerequisites for certification may be a big factor in which certification you will be able to get. JD Conway recommends asking the head of HR at either your own company or the company you’d like to work for about any preferences towards HRCI or SHRM (or other) certifications. No matter which certification you select, you’ll be required to pass the exam and maintain your certification by participating in recertification activities. What Is Required for Recertification? Unfortunately, your HR certification does not last for life. All SHRM and HRCI certifications are good for three years. If you want to take the test again, you can—or rather than spend long nights studying again, you can earn recertification credits. All of SHRM’s certifications and a majority of HRCI’s certifications require 60 credits (aPHR and aPHRI only require 45 credits) every three years to continue your certification. Some of the ways you can earn credits include attending conferences, watching webinars, participating in online courses, and volunteering.  BambooHR offers multiple opportunities to earn recertification credits throughout the year. But, don’t rush into getting a certification right away. Carefully consider your career path and if certification will benefit you. Make sure you take the time to select the right certification for you, and once you’ve put your resources into a certification stay certified by completing the necessary recertification credits. Or, if you’re an HR professional who is considering making a move to a new organization, chances are you see HR certification in either the desired or required categories for HR positions. Regardless of your situation, you may still be wondering: is an HR certification worth it? The truth is, only you can answer that question. But here are a few additional questions to consider that might help you make a decision.What is the value of an HR certification?An HR certification isn’t required to work in the field of human resources; however, for a variety of reasons, today’s HR professionals are seeking this formal recognition of their skills. “[Certification] is important to me because it serves as a culmination of my experiences and knowledge…that shows my peers and potential employers that I am a well-versed and dedicated HR professional,” Brandon Ambrose, SHRM-CP told the Society for Human Resource Management. It’s not only a matter of demonstrating that you have the skills and experiences required, or making yourself more appealing to potential employers, according to data from Payscale, it appears that certifications help HR professionals across all levels earn a higher wage when they have a certification:With certification, median pay range across all HR positions: $59,100Without certification, median pay range across all HR positions: $45,600The data also shows that with increasing responsibility and scope, there’s an increase in the percentage of HR professionals who hold some type of certification:5% of HR assistants11% of HR administrators28% of HR generalists30% of HR managers39% of HR directors42% of HR vice presidentsIn addition to the personal and professional rewards of earning an HR certification, these figures suggest that for career mobility and momentum, obtaining a certification can be a wise choice.What HR certifications are available? SHRM vs. HRCI. Currently, there are two providers that conduct the HR certification process – the HR Certification Institute (HRCI) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Both HRCI and SHRM require that applicants must meet specific educational and work experience criteria at the time they submit their application.Certification from HRCI: aPHR, PHR, PHRca, SPHR, GPHR, PHRi. The first HRCI certification was offered in 1973 (through the American Society of Personnel Administration’s Accreditation Institute). During the past 40+ years, HRCI (an independent nonprofit organization) has been working to create HR excellence. They maintain accreditation from the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. HRCI currently offers a variety of certifications, with levels of difficulty primarily based on experience:Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR): Professionals who are new to the field of HR.Professional in Human Resources (PHR): Professionals with proficiency in “technical and operational aspects of HR management” (e.g., U.S. laws and regulations and program implementation).Professional in Human Resources California (PHRca): HR professionals with mastery of the laws, regulations and practices unique to the state of California.Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR): HR leaders with a background and significant professional experience in the field of human resourcesGlobal Professional in Human Resources (GPHR): HR practitioners focused on expanding  HR beyond national bordersProfessional in Human Resources International (PHRi)—for HR professionals working in a single international locationThere are eligibility requirements for each certification based on education, minimum years of experience, and years of experience at specific levels. While a PHR is not required before applying for the SPHR certification, you need to meet the eligibility requirements as stated on the HRCI website: “minimum of 4 years of experience in a professional-level HR position with a Master’s degree or higher; or, a minimum of 5 years of experience in a professional-level HR position with a Bachelor’s degree; or, a minimum of 7 years of experience in a professional-level HR position with less than a Bachelor’s degree.” If you’re wondering which HRCI certification is right for you, there’s a convenient tool on their website which allows you to select your role, how many years you’ve worked in HR, and your areas of focus. Based on the data you select, you’ll be provided with a recommendation as to which certification is most relevant for you.Certification from SHRM: SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP. In 2015, SHRM began offering a competency-based certification for human resource professionals. More than 30,000 HR professionals provided input regarding the HR competencies on which the SHRM tests are based. The exams are accredited by The Buros Center for Testing.  SHRM currently offers two certifications, one for professionals with less experience and scope and a certification focused on senior-level HR leaders:SHRM-Certified Professional (SHRM-CP): Professionals who implement HR policies, deliver HR services, maintain HR operations, and answer HR questions.SHRM-Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP): HR professionals who lead HR functions, develop HR strategies to align with organizational goals, influence results, and analyze performance metrics.Regarding eligibility, SHRM provides this chart to explain the requirements:SHRM-CP AND SHRM-SCP ELIGIBILITY CHART. * Less than a bachelor’s degree includes: working toward a bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree some college, qualifying HR certificate program, high school diploma, or GED.Source: SHRM Certification Eligibility CriteriaWhat steps should you take to get certified?Taking on this type of goal can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be—break down the steps to make it happen. How HR Certifications Impact Pay How HR Certifications Impact Career Progression Best & Worst Industries for HR Certification Holders How to Choose the Best Certification for You Methodology Introduction. In 2018, there’s a myriad of credentials that HR professionals could pursue. Yet, we have not seen any research or hard data to help HR pros determine which particular HR credentials are worth pursuing. For example, what specific skills and competencies can one expect to gain from each certification? Which one will give HR pros the greatest pay boost? How do certifications impact one’s career trajectory and ability to move into management and leadership positions? To find the answers, PayScale collected salary and demographic information from over 102,000 respondents who completed our online salary survey. These respondents have HR job titles and 34 percent reported that they have at least one HR certification. We analyzed the impact of various HR certifications on compensation and career trajectory for HR professionals in the U.S.. For this study, we evaluated 10 distinct certifications from four HR membership organizations including SHRM, HRCI, World at Work and the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching. To determine the impact certifications have on compensation and career advancement for HR pros in the U.S., we looked at the dataset through a number of lenses. First, we built a statistical model to estimate the pay boost one can expect from having a particular HR credential, while controlling for other factors that impact compensation such as job title, industry and location. In addition, we evaluated the median pay for HR pros with and without certifications, the percent pay boost of having a certificate by metropolitan areas and by industry. Also, we examined how much compensation grew for certification holders over the last decade. Last but not least, we looked at the promotion velocity for those with certificates vs. those without. We found that for the most part, having an HR credential is beneficial from a pay perspective and a career advancement perspective. Below, we present the key findings. Types of HR certifications. HRCI. HRCI – The HR Certification Institute – has been offering certifications for over 40 years. It’s well recognized in the HR community: More than 500,000 HR professionals in more than 100 countries have earned certifications from HRCI. HRCI offers several types of certificates: The Professional in Human Resources (PHR) Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR) California Professional in Human Resources (PHRca), just for those practicing HR in California California Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR-CA), just for those practicing HR in California Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR) SHRM. SHRM – The Society for Human Resource Management –  is the largest HR membership organization focused on professional development. It has supported more than 100,000 employers representing 140 million employees worldwide.   In 2014, SHRM launched a new, “competency-based’ certification program for HR professionals to give them another option for learning and professional development.  According to SHRM’s website, the program provides practitioners with “job-relevant’ knowledge, and skills that are transferable across industries, geographic borders, job responsibilities and career levels. Certifications are  also “focused on advancement’, “strategic’, accredited by the Buros Center for Testing, and backed by SHRM, the world’s largest HR membership organization.   SHRM offers just two types of certifications: SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM -SCP)   When SHRM initially rolled out their own certificates, they allowed existing HRCI certification holders to map their old certifications over to the new SHRM option. World at Work. World at Work is the leading nonprofit professional association in compensation and total rewards. They provide professional development for those who design and deliver total rewards programs. World at Work’s most popular credential is the Certified Compensation Professional (CCP). Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC). The iPEC is one of the largest ICF-accredited coaching training schools in the world, it has helped over 15,000 graduates launch careers as Certified Professional Coaches. It offers the Certified Professional Coach (CPC) credential. Who’s Getting Certifications? In 2018, we found that 34.2 percent of all HR professionals have at least one HR credential. The prevalence of this certification have steadily declined from 2008 to 2014, but it’s then picked up in the last 4 years. A big part of this has to do with SHRM, which started to offer its own certifications (the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP) in 2015. % Of HR Professionals With At Least One Certification Which Certificates Are Most Prevalent in 2018? HRCI certifications are most prevalent in 2018. In fact, 30.4 percent of HR professionals in our dataset have at least one certification from HRCI. This makes sense, as HRCI has been offering HR certifications for over 40 years. Certifications % of HR Pros Has at least one certification 36.4% Professional in Human Resources (PHR) 16.9% SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) 15.4% Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) 7.9% SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) 5.3% Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR) 0.7% Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR) 0.3% Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) 0.2% California Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR-CA) 0.1% California Professional in Human Resources (PHR-CA) 0.1% Certified Professional Coach (CPC) 0.1% The most popular credential to get from the HRCI is the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification; 16.9 percent of HR professionals who responded to our survey in 2018 said they have this certification. The second most popular credential is SHRM’s Certified Professional certificate (SHRM-CP); 15.4 percent of all HR professionals who responded in our survey in 2018 said they have this. The Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) is the third most popular option (this requires someone to already have the PHR); 7.9 percent of all HR professionals who answered our survey in 2018 said they have this. The SHRM-SCP was just a little bit behind, with 5.3 percent of all HR professionals saying they have this in 2018. HR Certifications By Career Levels. Higher level HR professionals are more likely to have an HR certificate. While only 13.2 percent of HR administrators have at least one credential, 35.5 percent of HR managers are certified and 51.1 percent of Vice Presidents of HR are certified. Does It Make Sense to Have Multiple Certifications? It is not uncommon for HR professionals to have at least two certificates. Some choose to get the more senior-level certificate that follows the initial one. Others have gotten credentials from different certifying organizations. Certain pairs of HR credentials are fairly common: 50% of SHRM Certified Professionals (SHRM-CP) also have a Professional in Human Resource (PHR) certification offered by HRCI. 62.5% of SHRM Senior Certified Professionals (SHRM-SCP) also have a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification from HRCI. 41.8% of Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR) certification holders also have a SPHR certification (both offered by HRCI). 50% of Certified Professional Coach (CPC) certification holders also have a SPHR (offered by HRCI). 14.1% of PHR (offered by HRCI) certification holders also have a SHRM-CP How HR Certifications Impact Pay. How does having a certificate influence pay? How much does it vary by the type of credential one has? For the most part, they do give HR professionals a boost in pay. But the amount of the pay boost varies significantly depending on the particular type of credential, industry, work location, and job level. To determine that a pay boost can be attributed to having a particular certification and not other compensable factors, we used a statistical model to isolate the effect of HR certifications on pay among several HR jobs. We controlled for location, job survey response year, company size, years of experience and whether or not two credentials might be more valuable together. Using this approach, we determined statistically significant measures of “percent pay boost”, which estimates the effect of having a particular certificate on an individual’s pay. In other words, when we look at two people who have similar profiles, the person with a particular certificate can expect to see an X percent pay boost compared to the person without this certificate. Several Types of Certifications Gave Workers Significant Pay Boosts. The CPC, GPHR, and SPHR-CA gave their owners a double digit boost in pay. Those who have the Certified Professional Coach (CPC) certificate saw the highest boost in pay (28.8 percent), followed by those who have the Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR, 16 percent). We also found that those with a SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, HRCI’s PHR and SPHR can expect a pay boost, albeit a more incremental one. It’s important to note that there are prerequisites to getting the more “senior” certifications, including prior certificates and prior work experience in HR. So, the employee profile of someone who has a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) is different from the profile of someone who has a Professional in Human Resources certification (PHR). However, we’ve included job title and years of experience in our regression model to make the estimates of pay boost as comparable as possible. HR Certifications Are Gaining Value Over Time. Over the last 10 years, getting certified has become increasingly valuable to HR professionals from a pay perspective and a career acceleration perspective. In 2008, the percent boost in pay associated with having any certification was 17 percent. The percent pay boost has climbed up and up, reaching close to 40 percent in 2016 before dropping slightly in the last two years. In 2018, the percent boost in pay associated with having an HR certification is 31.6 percent. Pay Boost Associated With Certification Holders (Based on Median TCC) A Closer Look at Pay Boosts. When we looked at each type of certification individually, we found that with the exception of the aPHR, all certification types led to a boost in pay for those who have it. In addition, most credentials showed an upward trend where the percent pay boost increased year over year. Because SHRM only started to offer certifications in 2015, we felt that there weren’t enough years for clear trends on pay boost over time. We found that the median SHRM-CP certification holder reaped a 22.8 percent pay boost in 2018 compared to someone who has no certifications. The medianpaid SHRM-SCP holder saw a 89.1 percent boost in pay in 2018. Pay Increases as Certification Level Increases. As for specific certifications, median pay increases by 54 percent from a SHRM-CP certification to SHRM – SCP certification. We looked at the median total cash compensation for people who responded to our survey in 2018. SHRM-CP Median pay – $70,000 SHRM-SCP Median pay – $107,800 Median pay increases by 50 percent from a PHR certification to a SPHR certification. PHR Median pay – $72,000 SPHR Median pay – $108,000 Those with a GPHR make even more. These certification holders have a median pay of $155,000. Their higher pay is likely due to the fact that they work in corporations with a global footprint and those mega-corporations generally pay more than smaller businesses. Having a credential can help you increase your pay early and mid career, until you get to the director level. Once you’re at the director level, certifications do not yield an incremental boost in pay. We believe it’s likely that higher level HR professionals have gained enough practical experience that they no longer reap benefits from renewing their certifications. Having an HR certification positively influences an HR pro’s chances of being promoted, and this holds true for every job level. However, certifications matter most in the earliest phase of an HR pro’s career. For each job title, we looked at the percentage of people receiving promotions in 5 years. Getting a certification matters a lot at the HR assistant level: of certified professionals in this entry-level role, 82 percent report they have been promoted in the last five years, versus just 68 percent of those who aren’t certified. The 24.8 percent value for HR directors means having any certifications increases the probability of having been promoted in the past five years by 24.8 percent. Which Industries Pay Certified HR Professionals the Most? Not all industries value HR credentials equally. Healthcare, Retail & Customer Service and Accommodation & Food Services value certification holders the most. These are the industries where certification holders saw the highest percentage boosts in pay. Meanwhile, Technology, Nonprofits, Engineering & Science value credentials the least. Next, we looked at particular certifications to see which industries paid these certification holders the best. All up, those with SHRM-CP see the largest boosts in pay in Healthcare (27.7 percent), Retail & Customer Service (26.9 percent) and Accommodation & Food Services (23.8 percent). These certification holders see smallest boosts in pay in Finance & Insurance (13.9 percent), Engineering & Science (13.8 percent), Agencies & Consultancies (13.8 percent) and Technology (10.8 percent). Meanwhile, SHRM-SCP certification holders see the largest boosts in pay in Healthcare (90.6 percent), Real Estate & Rental and Arts (90.0 percent) and Entertainment & Recreation (85.0 percent). These certified professionals see the smallest boosts in pay in Energy & Utilities (55.4 percent), Construction (56.4 percent) and Nonprofits (61.5 percent). Percent Pay Boost For Certification Holders (Based on Median TCC) HRCI Certifications. Those that hold the PHR see the largest boosts in pay in Healthcare (27.7 percent), Retail & Customer Service (25.0 percent) and Accommodation & Food Services (22.1 percent). These certificate holders see the smallest boosts in pay in Technology (11.5 percent), Finance & Insurance (14.8 percent) and Engineering & Science (15.3 percent). Meanwhile, SPHR certificate holders see the largest boosts in pay in Real Estate & Rental (83.8%), Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (79.4 percent) and Retail and Customer Service (73.1 percent). These certification holders see the smallest boosts in pay in Nonprofits (55.6 percent), Agencies & Consultancies (50.2 percent) and Energy and Utilities (56.1 percent). Percent Pay Boost For Certification Holders (Based on Median TCC) Which Cities Pay Certification Holders the Most? We looked at pay for 50 Metro Areas to see where HR certification holders can earn the most. It’s especially lucrative for HR professionals be certified in California; those with credentials earned more than $20,000 more than those without credentials. These are the five metro areas where having a certificate boosts pay the most: 5 Metro Areas Where Certifications Have The Most Impact On Pay Certifications were not as valuable from a pay perspective in Detroit, Michigan, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Suffolk County, New York, Fort Worth, Texas or Newark New Jersey. These are the five metropolitan areas where having HR certifications have the least impact on pay. 5 Metro Areas Where Getting Certified Have Least Impact On Pay How to Choose the Best HR Certificate for You. But overall, getting an HR certification seems to be a smart move for the majority of U.S. HR professionals. Methodology. To measure the value of HR certifications, we analyzed salary profiles from 102,006 HR professionals in the United States who responded to our salary survey as early as 2003 and as late as May 2018. We restricted the sample to respondents with one of six common HR job titles (HR Assistant, HR Administrator, HR Generalist, HR Manager, HR Director, and VP of HR). 34,897 people reported having at least one HR certification (34.2 percent). We used a linear regression to account for the effects of other factors (such as years of experience, specific job title, location and so on) on pay and estimated the value of each certification by itself. Because some certifications co-occur frequently (for example, more than 60 percent of respondents with a SHRMCP also had a PHR), the value of one single certification can be difficult to measure; if an individual has both a SHRM-CP and a PHR, how can we say which of the two is responsible for their pay? We solved this problem by including every possible pair of certifications in the regression. This ensured that our estimates were reliable estimates of individual certifications. We restricted our sample to only HR professionals in California to estimate the effects of the two HRCI California-specific certifications. Definitions:. Total Cash Compensation (TCC): TCC combines base annual salary or hourly wage, bonuses, profit sharing, tips, commissions and other forms of cash earnings, as applicable. It does not include equity (stock) compensation, cash value of retirement benefits or value of other non-cash benefits (e.g., healthcare). Median Pay: The median pay is the national median (50th percentile) annual total cash compensation. Half the people doing the job earn more than the median, while half earn less. Job Title Five Years Ago: In PayScale’s salary survey, users are asked what their job title was five years ago. We used these data to calculate the ratio of HR professionals who received a promotion in the past five years. We excluded previous or current job titles outside of the list of titles above to deal with the issue of people switching functions to and from HR, and to identify title changes that are clearly promotions. If you are seeking a job in human resources, you will encounter job advertisements that specifically require not only a degree in HR, but also certification from a respected industry association. This certification proves that an HR candidate has taken the time to invest in his or her career. The PHR and SHRM are two different certifications available to human resources professionals who want to set themselves apart in the industry The most requested certifications are the SHRM-CP and the PHR. Each is issued by a different organization, is earned through a combination of industry experience and a rigorous timed exam, and carries their own weight with employers. They both require a significant amount of time and money to earn therefore it’s critical that you understand which certification is best for your career goals. Here’s a basic comparison of the SHRM-CP and the PHR certifications. Comparison of SHRM-CP to PHR. While you will note many similarities between the PHR and SHRM-CP certification tests, this is where things get interesting. The exam topics focus on different areas of human resources. SHRM-CP – Covers six (6) foundational and behavioral aspects of human resources knowledge, using situational and knowledge questions, including:  Leadership Business Interpersonal  People Organization Workplace PHR – Tests knowledge of HR related responsibilities in five (5) functional areas, using everyday scenarios and heavy on labor unions, in these areas: Business Management Talent Planning and Recruitment Learning and Development Total Rewards Employee and Labor Relations  It can be said that any human resource professional would benefit from earning both certifications to increase the chances of being hired. However, if an HR professional is aiming for a job as an HR Manager or specialist in a certain area of HR, he or she would benefit the most from taking the PHR. For someone interested in a more generalist role, a SHRM-CP would be a good option. Weighing the Value of PHR vs. SHRM-CP. Earlier in this article, we posed the question as to what is perceived to have the most value to employers. Is it one of the HR certifications over another? Do employers understand the actual requirements of the certifications…or do they simply list one of them because they know it means a candidate has invested more into their career? In an article at Glassdoor,  Laura Handrick, Senior Workplace and Careers Analyst for Fit Small Business said, “If I’m hunting for an HR professional, I’ll want to be sure they have certification from SHRM.” A quick search of the Glassdoor jobs directory turned up 2,801 jobs that listed a PHR as a requirement or preference by employers, along with HR work experience. A search for SHRM-CP resulted in 6,591 jobs in their directory that mentioned this as a requirement. That’s more than double the number of employers requesting SHRM-CP certification over PHR. Certifications certainly can make a difference, but not all certifications are created equal A search of Indeed resulted in 1,032 jobs mentioning a PHR vs. 525 jobs asking for a SHRM-CP. Many of the employers simply posted “HR Certification preferred (PHR or SHRM-CP)” so they did not indicate a preference. Over on LinkedIn’s job boards, we found 221 jobs that requested PHR certification and 1,216 requesting SHRM-CP certification from candidates. There were also many employers posting both certifications, “Professional in Human Resources (PHR), or SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP): Preferred” so again their preference was not clear. Some excellent insight was shared by Ben Eubanks, founder of upstartHR, author, and podcaster, about certification choices. Having been certified by both entities himself (SPHR and SHRM-SCP), he says it comes down to a decision based on your career goals. He recommends: 😤 Take the PHR certification. If you desire, “knowledge and mastery of HR-related business law, an understanding of the general concepts and theories underlying HR, and you work in HR at an organization with under 250 people.” 😤 Take the SHRM-CP certification. If you, “want to use the SHRM career resources, learn some intangible aspects of HR like leadership, consulting behaviors, and navigating your career, and you work at a larger or mature organization.”  There’s a hidden battle going on over your recertification credits and you might not even know it’s happening! One way to determine if an employer is leaning towards one certification over another is to find out what the current HR team members have earned. You can often find this data on LinkedIn under company pages and look at the credentials of the employees who work there. However, in most cases, an employer is going to prefer that a candidate has at least earned a certification from one of the recognised organizations rather than weed someone out just because it’s not from their first choice. The general consensus among HR professionals is that the PHR exams are based more on traditional HR topics, broader in scope and a good introduction to this field of work. The SHRM-CP has quickly earned respect and is geared towards the future of HR careers. Candidates may choose to pursue both in order to gain a more well-rounded view of HR. Tess. Should I Earn an HR Certification? Unlike some professions, professionals working in human resources do not need to hold a professional certification in order to find and hold a job. Though the HR Certification Institute (HRCI) and Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) offer several unique certifications for all types of experience levels and knowledge areas, these credentials are not always required when looking for an HR job. Naturally, this raises the question of whether or not it is worth it to pursue an HR certification. Do the resources (time and money) spent earning a credential merit any advantages that having it might bring? Benefits of HR Certification. Career Advancement. Whether you're looking to break into the field of HR or have been working for a while and are looking to move up, there are few better ways than HR certification to prove your value. A study commissioned by the HRCI found that 96% of employers believe HR certifications are important and, when reviewing job applications, would favor a candidate with certification over a non-HR certified candidate. In short, having certification makes you stand out from the crowd and increases your chances of landing a job or promotion. Furthermore, companies have a financial incentive to bring in employees with HR certification. In a five-year study from 2011-2015, companies who employed five or more HRCI-certified professionals saw their stock prices outperform companies who employed fewer certified professionals by a margin of 51%. International Recognition. If you plan to work for an international corporation or take your talents to a country other than the U.S., you should know that HR certification is a valuable commodity when dealing with international employers. The aforementioned HRCI study also found that professional certification was second only to graduate degrees when considering which credential employers valued most. In addition, certification was seen as the best-performing qualification in several fields, including career advancement and (most important to the title of this article) return on investment, or ROI. Better yet, you don't even need to hold a certification specific to the international market. While globally-focused HR certifications such as the PHRi and GPHR are certainly valuable, other credentials such as the SHRM-CP and SPHR are also respected in other countries as they are perceived to add value and professionalism to international HR departments. Better Salaries. Though HR certification is not given freely (you need to pay to sit for the exams), the financial benefits that you can expect to receive will far outweigh any initial costs that come from paying for the exam. In addition to opening up paths to more senior jobs that invariably come with higher salaries, the simple act of holding an HR certification makes you more likely to earn more money. The HRCI-commissioned study found that professional certification was the sole qualification that employers both highly valued and showed a high willingness to pay for. Graduate degrees, while desirable, did not also generate a willingness to pay. A study by Payscale.com looked at HR salaries in 20 metropolitan areas and found that professionals with specialized certifications could expect to earn up to $19,000 more than their uncertified counterparts. How Much Time Does it Take to Get Certified? In regards to concerns about time, HR certifications do not require the completion of courses or programs. Unlike HR certificate and degree programs, HRCI and SHRM do not require candidates to complete any sort of pre-certification program. All you need to do is satisfy the eligibility requirements and pass the certification exam. The only eligibility requirement for the HRCI and SHRM exams is work experience, or a combination of postsecondary education and slightly less work experience. The exact amount of required work experience will vary depending on the seniority of the certification you are pursuing and your education level. The work experience requirement can vary from one to seven years, but there is no additional training that you'll need to complete in order to pursue certification. The only exception is the HRCI's aPHR, a certification designed for entry-level HR professionals that only requires a high school diploma (and no work experience). Of course, this is not meant to imply that earning HR certification is in any way easy. In theory, all you need to do is spend a few hours taking an exam; in practice, you need to spend weeks, months, even years studying material and making sure you know the content inside and out. HRCI exams are far from a formality; the PHR (55%), SPHR (57%) and GPHR (67%) all feature first-time pass rates of two-thirds or less. For SHRM, the SHRM-CP credential has a pass rate of around 70% and the SHRM-SCP clocks in with a pass rate that is below 60%. Don't make the mistake of assuming that your years of working in HR will be an acceptable substitute for study and preparation. Despite their extensive experience and knowledge, thousands of seasoned HR professionals fail these exams on a regular basis. Fortunately, online study guides are available to help you get ready. The below study guides provide in-depth reviews of important test topics: PHR exam SPHR GPHR (Global professional; for international professionals) PHRi (international version of the PHR) SPHRi PHR-CA(for professionals in California) The Cost of HR Certification. If you've looked into HR certification, you may be deterred by the prices of the certification exams. These exams don't come cheap; SHRM exams cost $300 for members and $400 for non-members, and HRCI exams start at $350 and climb as high as $495 (not to mention the $100 application fee). For some professionals, this can be a dealbreaker. When factoring in the cost of preparation materials and the time spent getting ready, you can expect to spend upwards of $1,000, and that's assuming that you pass the test on your first try. Candidates needing to sit a second, third, or more time will need to pay their registration fees a second time. Recertification. One future consideration that you should keep in mind deals with the matter of recertification. In order to maintain credentials, HR professionals who hold certification will need to satisfy certain requirements to prove that their knowledge has stayed current with recent developments in HR. For SHRM credentials, this means earning 60 professional development credits every three years. Candidates looking to renew their HRCI certifications will also need to complete professional development activities every three years. These credits can be earned in a wide range of ways, from completing PD courses to attending conferences to participating in a webinar. If you would prefer to avoid earning credits and want to accelerate the process, you can simply re-take your certification exam instead. If you pass, you will maintain your certification. The choice is yours; if you trust your knowledge, you can opt for the re-take. If you enjoy continuing education or if your job requires you to attend webinars and conferences anyway, you're probably better off earning the credits. Arguments Against HR Certification. For all the benefits, earning HR credentials does have its downsides and is far from a unanimously approved career decision. The primary objection from those who do not favor this path is that not all hiring managers believe in the value of HR certification. While some companies seek out applicants who hold certifications, other hiring managers will completely ignore these credentials, instead preferring to look at a candidate's overall skill set and level of experience. In the eyes of some managers, having an impressive track record means more than having HR certification. Making the financial commitment, only to learn that a prospective employer does not value certification, is a very real problem for many professionals. Writing for the HR blog HR Payroll Systems, Dave Rietsema notes that he had to endure frequent marathon study sessions, spending long parts of his weekends sitting on the couch for hours at a time getting ready for the exam. Earning certification can be a massive waste of time and money if your intended employer does not value such a qualification. Conclusion. In summation, earning HR certification requires major time and money commitments. For some professionals, the benefits make it a no-brainer, but others remain skeptical about the long-term advantages of these credentials. When making the decision, be sure to do your research and have a clear picture of your own future professional goals. Those organizations often develop tests or examinations they can use, to judge the skills, knowledge, and abilities of people in their industry.  With a properly rigorous examination, a certification can become a valuable asset, and people who hold those certifications become more sought-after than their counterparts who have not passed the exam. In many ways, Human Resources isn’t very different. There are three primary certifications in the industry: SHRM-CP, PHR, and SPHR. If you’re looking to make yourself a valuable HR asset, you could probably benefit from acquiring certification, but which one should you focus on? Let’s examine these certifications and determine their quality. Who issues them? How rigorous are their standards? Are there any loopholes, flaws, or issues with the systems? Let’s find out! Which Certification Should You Pursue? What Is SHRM-CP/SCP? . SHRM-CP is a certification offered by SHRM, the Society for Human Resource Management. SHRM is a recognized authority in the human resources space, and their content is frequently cited on this blog and many others. They know what they’re talking about, and are one of the largest human resources organizations in the world. SHRM offers two certifications, of which -CP is the first. The other is SHRM-SCP, which we’ll discuss lightly as well. SHRM promotes their certifications as: Competency-based. Rather than testing your ability to memories facts and strategies, they test how well you’re able to implement them. The exams are updated routinely to include information about how these modern workplaces work, rather than an outdated view of how they should work. The SHRM certifications are applicable in any industry and any country, rather than within certain boundaries. Thousands of employers seek human resources employees with certifications, and SHRM-CP is often the certification being cited as “in-demand”. The exam is also accredited. According to SHRM: “The SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams are accredited by the Buros Center for Testing, asserting that the HR credentials meet the highest standards in testing.” You can learn more about what this means here. What Are the Requirements of SHRM-CP? . Before you can take an SHRM examination, you must meet certain requirements. These requirements depend on the exam you want to take and your education level. SHRM-CP (Certified Professional) requires: If your education is less than a Bachelor’s Degree and you are in an HR role: Three years of HR experience. If your education is less than a Bachelor’s Degree and you are not in an HR role: Four years of HR experience. If you have an HR-related Bachelor’s Degree: One year of HR experience. If you have a non-HR-related Bachelor’s Degree: Two years of HR experience. If you have a non-HR-related Master’s Degree: One year of HR experience. If you have an HR-related Master’s Degree: Current employment of any duration. The price of the exam varies as well; $300 for early bird members, $400 for early bird non-members, $375 for non-early members, and $475 for non-early non-members. SHRM-SCP (Senior Certified Professional) is similar, but all of the numbers are increased. You can read their chart here. The SHRM-CP examination is broken into segments covering core competencies, such as leadership techniques, ethical practice, relationship management, cultural effectiveness, business acumen, and critical evaluation. What Is PHR/SPHR and What Are Its Requirements? . aPHR, PHR, and SPHR are three certifications offered by HRCI, the Human Resources Certification Institute. HRCI is not quite as large or as old as SHRM, though they are in the modern-day relatively comparable organizations, and they are both headquartered in the same city. In actuality, they offer many more than three certifications: aPHR: Associate Professional in Human Resources, aimed at newcomers to the HR industry starting their careers. aPHRi: Associate Professional in Human Resources (International), the same certification, aimed at international roles. PHR: Professional in Human Resources, aimed at established HR employees who want to progress in their careers. PHRca: Professional in Human Resources (California), a CA-specific variant for the test for local employees. PHRi: Professional in Human Resources (International), the upgraded version of aPHRi. SPHR: Senior Professional in Human Resources, aimed at established professionals looking to move into the upper ranks of HR executives. SPHRi: Senior Professional in Human Resources (International), the same thing for international roles. GPHR: Global Professional of Human Resources, a certification for top-level executives who primarily work with multinational corporations and who have globalized concerns. All of these different certifications have different requirements for education and experience levels. They all have a $100 application fee, as well as a fee to take the exam, ranging from $300 to $500 depending on the exam. You can view each certification here, and check each of their requirements individually. The breakdown of what each PHR certification covers varies from exam to exam. For example, the general PHR exam, comparable to SHRM-CP, has this breakdown: 39% Employee and Labor Relations 20% Business Management 16% Talent Planning and Acquisition 15% Total Rewards 10% Learning and Development HRCI is unique in that they offer the introductory certification aPHR, all the way up to high-end executive certifications in GPHR, with many options in between. SHRM does not offer quite as much variation. This is good, in that it gives a granular impression of the skills and abilities of the person with the certification. On the other hand, it means a professional in HR will need to progress through many more certifications and spend much more money doing so throughout their career. How Do These Certifications Compare? . Each certification has its niche. They are all valuable, but which one is more valuable often depends on your goals as a human resources professional. SHRM certifications are broadly recognized. The organization SHRM is one of the largest in the field and has global membership. Their certifications test a lot of soft skills, and they are often well-rounded certifications that prepare you for a long career in human resources. SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP are good certifications if you intend to work in a large organization with large HR teams, or dedicated teams for other related aspects of HR, such as legal and compliance.  Since the SHRM exams do not cover legalities, compliance policies, and specifics quite as much, they are better suited to generalists and administrators. The PHR certifications offered by HRCI are more granular, which means they are a better indication of the skill level of the prospective employee. When you have aPHR but not PHR, an employer knows you have basic skills and experience but haven’t reached a level of professional attainment they might want in an experienced hire. If you have PHR but not SPHR, likewise they know you’re experienced but not senior-level. PHR certifications are better than SHRM certifications in two ways. They cover more in the way of legality, compliance, and technical details. SHRM tends to test more soft skills and the application of management techniques, where PHR are generally more concerned with specific knowledge and compliance. They are better for international or global companies. PHRi or the GPHR certifications are designed for companies that operate in non-US countries or across borders, and thus have special concerns that domestic companies might not. PHR certifications also seem to be better regarded, though this varies from company to company and industry to industry. From UpstartHR: “My immediate supervisor is PHR credentialed. When I announced that I had earned my SHRM-CP credential, the response was underwhelming and I was left with the impression that they are not convinced that it is on par with the PHR credential.” Additionally, it seems that the industry broadly recognizes HRCI more than SHRM, at least in terms of certifications. Again, according to UpstartHR: “In terms of purely being recognized by the hiring community as a show of your professional skills, HRCI certifications are requested about four times as often as SHRM certifications.” It’s also worth mentioning that SHRM is a membership society, while HRCI is not. This means that members of SHRM can gain many benefits from the organization, without necessarily needing to take and pass their exams. It’s also worth noting that these certifications (while overlapping) are not mutually exclusive. You can take and pass both if you have the time and funds for it. The truth is, however, that a lot depends on the organization whether or not this will be valuable. Companies often tend to prefer one or the other, but the preference of which usually comes down to which one the head of the HR department themselves happens to have. Which Certification Should You Pursue? . Several factors will influence what certification you should pursue. Consider the following questions to help you decide which of these certifications make the most sense for you and your profession. Are you new to HR and want a certification to kick-start your career? If so, go with the aPHR certification. The SHRM-CP certification is aimed at mid-level professionals. Unless you have an HR-focused Master’s Degree, you need several years’ worth of experience in HR to even qualify to take the test. Thus, the only real certification available to you as a newcomer to the profession is aPHR. How large is the organization you want to work for? Small companies often tend to prefer PHR certifications. This is because they tend to be broader and more applicable to various facets of HR, including legal issues. SHRM certifications don’t cover all of this. If your company is small and needs a “jack of all trades” HR professional, the PHR certifications are a better option. Conversely, if your company is large enough to have a dedicated legal/compliance team, you may not need that specialization that PHR provides. The SHRM certifications are generally better for putting your skills and knowledge into practice and can arm you with powerful techniques for managing a dedicated HR team. How global is your organization? As mentioned, PHR is often best for smaller companies, while SHRM is good for mid-to-large organizations. However, the largest organizations, the multinationals, and the global corporations tend to swing back in PHR’s favor. The international and global PHR certifications are extremely useful in these contexts and teach a lot of international, regional, and cultural facets of HR that SHRM might not. That said, not all major corporations care about certifications at that upper level. By the time you’re reaching executive and C-level human resources roles, certifications are less important than your experience and your track record. Companies will often care more about what other organizations you’ve worked for and what tangible results you’ve brought to them over any pieces of paper you’ve earned from a certifying body. Which certification does your organization prefer? This is not an objective factor. If your company prefers PHR certifications, earning a PHR certification is better than earning an SHRM certification. Conversely, if your organization prefers SHRM, a PHR certification may be less valuable. If you’re looking to leave your current organization in favor of a different company, it can be worthwhile to investigate the leaders of HR for that company. Look at their LinkedIn bios and their professional portfolios, and see which certifications they have earned. This can inform you which one will be better for applying to that organization. Some factors are not a real concern. For example, both organizations have similar continuing education requirements, and the pricing for exams is comparable enough to make no difference. The education and experience requirements for SHRM certifications are mirrored by their equivalent PHR certifications. PHR is more granular but offers more room for mobility. The long and the short of it is that neither certification is truly better than the other. They are comparable in many ways, and they are better than not having a certification at all. However, if you’re interested in specific areas of human resources, like international or legal HR, you may be more inclined to earn PHR certifications over SHRM. Conversely, if you’re in an organization that is a member of the SHRM and prefers its atmosphere, the SHRM certifications may be more valuable. Most recruiters and HR professionals learn the old fashioned way—through experience—and in 2020, there was a lot of learning to do. HR teams had to pivot fast, to prioritize keeping their people safe or shifting to work from home. Meanwhile many recruiters have come to rely on virtual interviews. If you’ve come out the other side, you deserve a medal. Could certification be the next best thing? It’s something a lot of HR and recruiting professionals consider—but is it worth it? If you’re confused, you’re not alone. Recruiting is one of the few professional industries out there with no real standardized “track” or academic discipline that prepares someone for success in the field. There isn’t one school you need to attend, one “be all, end all” certification you need to have, or even one way to get into the industry. As far as recruiting goes, there are probably as many paths into the profession as there are people in it. With dozens of certifying organizations offering sometimes more than 3 different certifications, the landscape is vast. Read on and we’ll break it down and help you decide if a recruiting certification program is right for you. So What Are Recruiting Certifications? Recruiting certifications come in all sizes, shapes, and colors and there are more than a few places you can get them from. The largest and most well-known organizations are the HRCi (Human Resources Certification Institute) and SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management). The options for recruiting certifications programs can be overwhelming with options including: aPHR PHR PHRca SPHR GPHR PHRi SPHRi SHRM-CP SHRM-SCP Throw in certification programs from AIRS, NAPS, Social Talent, The People Sourcing Certification, The Sourcing Institute AND Linkedin, and you’ve got yourself quite a headache! Recruiting certifications help you gain the skills and knowledge you need to do your job. And let’s face it, they also give you the rights to put those fun three and four letter acronyms on your resume that help you get a better job and better pay. Here, we’ll cover some of the best-known recruiting certifications. The PHR from the HRCi. Generally speaking, the PHR is great for people already working in HR (you need to have at least one year of experience) who intend on staying in and focusing on human resources. The exam is concentrated on the tactical, practical aspects of HR and less on business strategy and management. If you want to stay in HR and see yourself doing that for at least the next 5 years or so, the PHR is your best bet. If you see yourself branching out to expand to other areas of the business or if you have an interest in designing HR policy and influencing business strategy, the SPHR might be a better match. The PHR certification is weighted more heavily towards the tactical aspects of HR and less on overall business and strategy. It focuses on: Workforce planning and employment (25%) Employee and labor relations (20%) Compensation and benefits (19%) HR development (18%) Business management and strategy (11%) Risk management (8%) To be eligible for the PHR certificate, you need to either: Have at least one year of experience in HR and at least a Master’s degree Have at least two years of experience and a Bachelor’s Have at least four years of experience and a HS diploma The PHR exam takes 3 hours and has 150 multiple choice questions and 25 pretest questions. There are a few other human resources certifications you can get from the HRCi, depending on where you want to focus: aPHR (Associate Professional in Human Resources) PHR (Professional in Human Resources) PHRca (Professional in Human Resources – California) SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources) GPHR (Global Professional in Human Resources) PHRi (Professional in Human Resources – International) SPHRi (Senior Professional in Human Resources – International) The SHRM-CP. The SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP are issued by the SHRM and they are a great choice if you’ve been in the field for a while and are currently in a director level role or higher. You’re a great candidate for the SHRM certifications if you have six to eight years under your belt and you’re focused on strategic decisions like designing HR policy. You’ve learned the ropes already and you are ready to take on ownership of HR and influence the direction of the business overall. The SHRM certifications are offered at a CP (Certified Professional) and SCP (Senior Certified Professional) level. Many people considering the SHRM recruiting certifications are also weighing the pros and cons of going for an MBA instead. Both the MBA and the SHRM are focused heavily on business strategy, but the SHRM focuses more heavily on human resources. If you see yourself evolving out of an HR role or you’d like to switch paths in the future, an MBA could be a better fit in the long term. If you’ve found your home in HR and don’t see a career change in the future, the SHRM certification is the way to go. The SHRM-CP covers: Business management and strategy (30%) HR development (19%) Workforce planning and employment (17%) Employee and labor relations (14%) Risk management (7%) To be eligible for the SHRM-CP certificate, you need to either: Currently be in an HR role and have at least a Master’s degree Have at least one year of experience in HR and at least a Bachelor’s Have at least three years of experience and a HS diploma The SHRM-CP exam takes 4 hours and has 160 questions (95 knowledge questions and 65 situational judgement questions). Great! So now what? Do I go HRCi, or SHRM? As if you weren’t confused enough, now you have to choose from two organizations to get your certification. Never fear. We’ll keep it simple. The HRCi’s test is a bit more practical and tactical, so it’s good for someone who is good at memorizing facts, figures and practical knowledge. SHRM’s test is more complex and uses a bit more of the critical thinking side of the brain where you’ll use your knowledge and apply it to solve problems. Think about it this way – either certification will show you’re serious about your career. Just pick the one that fits you and where you want to go! Wow, that’s a lot of work. Why do people get certifications? There are many reasons people consider getting a human resources certification, but most of the reasons fall into a few buckets: To get a job or stand out in the job market To make more money now To make more money in the future To stay relevant in the recruiting industry To get a promotion or a higher level job When you’re early on in your career, sometimes a recruiting certification will help you stand out next to another candidate. Recruiters who are early in their careers are less likely to have years of experience, so a recruiting certification can show how serious you are about your job. Later on as you get more experience, a human resources certification might be less important than the on-the-job skills you’ve gained. Still, all things being equal, it’s safe to say that getting a certification is worth it because it can give you an edge up on other people in your field who have similar experience and are competing for the same jobs. Certified recruiting specialists also make more money than non-certified recruiters. On average, they can make anywhere between $15,000 to $20,000 more per year. At that point, within a few years you can make your tuition back and more. If you’re looking to climb the ladder in your career, score a senior level position or become a Director of HR, a human resources certification or graduate degree can definitely give you a leg up and make sure you get a job. Some recruiters won’t even take a second look at your resume if you don’t have a certification listed on your resume. So What Are the Main Benefits? In short, starting a recruiting or HR certification program and getting your recruiting or HR certification will give you a strong base of knowledge to work from, and can help make sure you stay competitive while pursuing a career in the industry. You’ll learn things like: How to conduct interviews and screen candidates How to write job descriptions and identify core competencies needed for roles being filled What job boards to use when posting positions to get maximum reach How to implement candidate selection processes and how to deploy recruiting technology (e.g., applicant tracking systems, recruiting software, reference and background checking) How to administer offer letters, complete the I-9 verification process, coordinate relocations and immigration How to implement an onboarding process and training programs for new hires Strategies for reducing employee churn How to make sure your workforce planning and HR activities are ethical and compliant How to manage and implement compensation and benefits programs How to ensure workplace health, safety, security and privacy activities are compliant with federal laws Recruiting is a unique field that draws many types of people in, and the vast majority of people in the field aren’t certified. Getting your human resources certification will help you stand out in your field – and if you’re serious about staying with it, it’ll help make sure you have a long, happy road ahead of you. Certification Alternatives. Still not convinced? There’s definitely a few other things you can do if you don’t want to go the recruiting or HR certification program route. Along with the many other forms of certification you can get online, you can also strengthen your skills by taking classes, reading up online, building your network, and building your professional brand on social media. Aside from that, you can also work on some of the soft skills necessary to be a good recruiter. Some of the top skills and personality traits you need are sales skills, people skills, communication skills, e-recruiting software savviness (ATS, anyone?), positivity, and persistence. You can always strengthen these skills by taking up related jobs before getting into recruiting – and then you can showcase your skills at interviews once you’re ready to go. Certification may not be for everyone, especially if you’re still hesitant about investing long term in recruiting as a career. But you probably have many questions. How difficult is it? Will I have to take time off to study? Will it really help me in my career? In today’s post, we examine whether or not an HR certification is worth it. The PHR and SHRM-CP. The HR certifications are offered by SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) and HRCI (Human Resources Certification Institute). SHRM offers two levels, Certified Professional and Senior Certified Professional: SHRM-CP Society for Human Resource Management Certified Professional SHRM-SCP Society for Human Resource Management Senior Certified Professional HRCI offers several different flavors: aPHR Associate Professional in Human Resources PHRca Professional in Human Resources—California PHRi Professional in Human Resources International SPHR Senior Professional in Human Resources SPHRi Senior Professional in Human Resources International GPHR Global Professional in Human Resources So, is HR certification worth it? Short answer: yes. As measured by several different metrics, certification pays off. The senior-level certifications generally have a greater impact on pay. Let’s look at the numbers. The compensation research firm, PayScale, conducted a massive national study. They analyzed 40 million salary profiles and 250 factors that affect compensation. The time period studied was March 2012 to March 2013. They included 10 industries in the 10 largest cities. The following comes from PayScale’s data analysis. Will I Earn More With Certification? HR professionals with an SPHR earn 93% more than those without a certification. Those with the SPHR earn 49% more than those with a PHR. Not surprisingly, salaries increase with the level of certification. How Do HR Salaries Compare Across The Country? HR professionals with either certification earn the most in Washington D.C., Boston, and New York. For example, the average salary for those with certification in Washington D.C. is $77K vs. $66K in Miami. On average, the certification commands $20K more in the largest cities. When compared per state, California HR professionals see the greatest boost in pay for certification. CPC, SPHR-CA, GPHR Most Valuable. The CPC (Certified Professional Coach) is especially valuable. Those with the CPC credential earn 28 percent more. The CPC is offered by the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC). The Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR) increases pay 16 percent on average. The GPHR is offered by the HRCI. GPHR holders also earn the highest—$155K on average. California Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR-ca) corresponds with a 14 percent salary increase. Does Industry Matter? The PHR is most valuable in healthcare where it commands a salary that is 27 percent higher on average. Followed by retail/customer service at 25 percent. Accommodation/food services came in third at 22.1 percent. The industries in which the PHR doesn’t increase salary as much are technology at 11 percent and finance/insurance at 14.8 percent. SPHRs correspond to a larger increase in real estate, arts, entertainment/recreation, and retail/customer service. The SPHR has less impact for nonprofits, agencies and consultancies, and energy and utilities. The PayScale study also determined that HR certifications have more value now than they did ten years ago. What Do The HR Certification Tests Measure? If you are trying to decide which certification to earn, consider the differences in topics covered. The PHR test is organized as follows: Workforce planning and employment (25%) Employee and labor relations (20%) Compensation and benefits (19%) HR development (18%) Business management and strategy (11%) Risk management (8%) The topics covered for the SHRM are: Leadership (Leadership & Navigation, Ethical Practice) Interpersonal (Relationship Management, Communication, Global and Cultural Effectiveness) Business (Business Acumen, Consultation, Critical Evaluation) How Do I Become Eligible to Take The Certification Tests? The education and experience eligibility requirements are as follows: PHR Eligibility. A minimum of 1 year of experience in a professional-level HR position with a Master’s Degree or higher, or A minimum of 2 years experience in a professional HR position with a Bachelor’s Degree, or A minimum of 4 years of experience in a professional-level HR position with less than a Bachelor’s Degree SHRM-CP Eligibility. If you have less than a Bachelor’s Degree: Partial HR-related degree requires 3 years in HR role Partial non-HR degree requires 4 years in HR role If you have a Bachelor’s Degree: If it’s an HR-related degree, you need 1 year in HR role If it’s a non-HR degree, you need 2 years in HR role If you have a Graduate Degree: If HR-related degree, you must currently work in HR role Non-HR degree, you must have 1-year work experience in HR role If you decide to become certified, it’s good to know that your investment will more than pay for itself. Compensation software and data company Payscale noticed numerous professionals like you pondering this same question. The organization took this as a sign that it was worth taking a closer look at some data to analyze the true impact HR certifications can have on a professional’s job prospects, salary and potential for career advancement. Join us as we examine Payscale’s findings, which can help you assess the value of prepping for your HR certification online. But first, let’s learn more about your certification options. HR Certifications: What are they? While HR certifications are rarely required by employers, they can help convey the added value you could bring to an organization. Obtaining certification is the perfect way for current and aspiring HR professionals to distinguish themselves as experts in the field. Holding an HR certification demonstrates a candidate’s competence, experience, dedication and credibility. There are a number of different HR credentials you could pursue. To help you better understand what you can expect by getting certified, we’ve outlined the basics of two popular HR certifications below. What is PHR certification? . The HR Certification Institute® (HRCI) offers a suite of credentials that are prevalent in the industry. The most popular among them is the Professional in Human Resources® (PHR) credential. The PHR demonstrates mastery of the technical and operational aspects of HR management, including an understanding of U.S. laws and regulations. This credential path is ideal for those who have experience in professional-level HR positions, which means they’re well-versed in tasks related to program implementation, are accountable to another HR professional at their organization and have responsibilities that focus on the HR department rather than the organization. To be eligible for the PHR, you must meet one of the following conditions: You have at least one year of experience in a professional-level HR position and a master’s degree or higher. You have at least two years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a bachelor’s degree. You have at least four years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a high school diploma. What is SPHR certification? Another common certification from the HRCI is the Senior Professional in Human Resources® (SPHR) credential, which is for individuals looking to solidify their place as HR leaders. The SPHR certification can help demonstrate mastery of the strategic and policy-making aspects of HR management. It’s ideal for big-picture thinkers who are responsible for planning, rather than implementing, HR policy. SPHR-qualified professionals are known for being accountable to HR department goals, having in-depth knowledge of all HR disciplines and understanding business issues that stretch beyond the general HR function. To be eligible for the SPHR, you must meet one of the following conditions: You have at least four years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a master’s degree or higher. You have at least five years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a bachelor’s degree. You have at least seven years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a high school diploma. 3 Reasons to earn your HR certification. Now that you know a bit more about two HR certifications, it’s time to dig into some research to uncover the true value of pursuing this supplemental training. Payscale discovered the following three benefits to earning your HR certification by collecting salary and demographic information from more than 102,000 HR professionals. 1. Certification can set you apart from the competition. As you push your HR career forward, you’re likely eager to do whatever you can to make yourself more competitive for some coveted positions. It’s worth noting that 36 percent of surveyed professionals report having at least one HR certification. You may also be interested to know that certification increases incrementally for each tier of HR professionals. Consider that while only about 13 percent of HR administrators are certified, more than half of HR vice presidents are certified. 2. Certification can lead the way to higher pay. One of the most notable findings from the Payscale survey was the fact that obtaining certification can significantly impact salary. While the exact boost in pay is dependent on numerous factors — the particular type of credential, the industry, the work location and the job level — HR certifications do result in a pay increase for most professionals in this field. Over time, the impact has grown. In 2008, for example, professionals with any HR certification saw their salary increase by an average of 17 percent. When we fast forward to 2018, we can see that professionals who obtained certification saw an increase closer to 31.6 percent. It’s also true that pay typically increases as certification level increases. For example, median pay increases by 50 percent from a PHR certification to a SPHR certification. 3. Certification can boost your chances for a promotion. Lastly, HR professionals who pursue certification will often see their odds of receiving a promotion increase significantly. This fact remains true for every job level. HR directors, for instance, become nearly 25 percent more likely to receive a promotion within five years of obtaining certification. While the chance for positive career progression increases across job levels, certifications appear to matter most in the earliest phases of an HR professional’s career. For example, HR assistants with at least one certification are 14 percent more likely to get promoted than those who are uncertified. Prepare for your HR certification online. It’s clear there are some real benefits to obtaining your HR certification. It can help you stand out in a competitive field and even set you on the path toward a pay raise or a promotion at your current organization. Regardless of the specific HR certification you want to pursue, you’ll need to sit for your exam in person. The human resources field is full of professionals who have a variety of different educational paths and backgrounds, but nearly all have a four-year degree. For example, those with strong math and science skills might find employment in compensation or employee benefits. Teachers could transition into HR by becoming trainers, while law school graduates may find positions as labor relations specialists. While there are a number of undergraduate HR programs available at U.S. colleges and universities, a bachelor’s degree in a related subject – such as communications, business, industrial/organizational psychology, sociology and the social sciences – could also be applied to a career in human resources. Erin Warnock, SHRM-CP and human resource analyst at the UCPath Center, said her journey to a career in HR consisted of several jobs in a variety of industries. She first obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Riverside with a double major in women’s studies and sociology. After college, Warnock briefly worked as an administrative assistant in an operations department of a construction company.  “While at that company, I transferred over to the safety, HR and risk management department,” she continued. “I absolutely loved the HR portion of the job – that started my career in HR.” Here are some tips on how to climb the human resources career ladder: Focus on Education and Training According to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), HR professionals can further their career by earning an appropriate professional certification: The Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR) from the HR Certification Institute is the first certification designed for professionals new to HR. For those with experience, check outSHRM’s Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) Or look into the HR Certification Institute’s Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) The Professional in Human Resources – California (PHRca) certification is for an HR professional who has mastered the laws, regulations and HR management practices unique to California. Warnock said she currently holds a SHRM-CP certification. In order to become certified, candidates are first tested on their HR knowledge. “My biggest study tip is to get a study buddy and relate study material information to what you have already seen in your workplace,” she added. Aspiring practitioners can also work toward a career in human resources by signing up for a continuing education program. The University of California provides workshops and classes that broaden a professional’s HR skills. UCLA Extension, UC Riverside Extension and UC San Diego Extension all offer professional certificates in Human Resource Management that taps into special projects, case studies and role-playing opportunities to create a practical learning experience. Warnock said she also obtained a certificate in Human Resources Management from UCR’s Extension Center. Gain Experience in HR On-the-job experience in human resources is essential, as practitioners need to apply what they have learned in the classroom to the real world. According to Warnock, HR is not static. “There is always something new to learn.” One way to get experience is to work in an administrative role at an organization for several years and then transition into HR. For instance, some begin their HR journey in a payroll processing position. Another way to break into human resources without experience is by starting off as a recruiter at a staffing company. Extroverts comfortable in the sales and networking aspect of talent acquisition could leverage that experience into an employee services (customer service) role at the UCPath Center, for example. If you’re a college student or a recent graduate, an internship in an HR department can provide hands-on experience, as well as exposure to prospective employers. Or you can volunteer at an organization to further your professional development and expand your network. You can use these opportunities to see what areas of HR you enjoy the most and build up your skill set. One of the best ways to find an internship or a volunteer position in HR is to contact your alma mater and reach out to alumni in the HR industry. Cultivate Business Relationships Job candidates are finding their way into HR-related careers these days by attending professional networking events such as industry-specific conferences, local SHRM chapter meetings, and getting involved with professional associations. Warnock said she attended the California HR conference in 2017. “I learned so much,” she added. “I also attend a lot of UC Riverside alumni association events for networking.” It’s important to meet HR professionals in the community. Before you ask for their advice/help, it’s a good idea to find out how you can add value to their organization. Digital networking has risen in popularity in recent years, thanks to online social networking sites LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. When it’s time to write a brief networking note, be sure to maintain a polite and professional tone. The goal is to establish rapport, and then ask for general information and advice. Remember, a successful professional should work hard at building their knowledge, as well as expanding and maintaining their business networks. Over a third of HR professionals have a certification to their name. Director level and above, half do. But unlike other fields, HR doesn’t just have one generally accepted track. Today, there are two major players in HR certification: The Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) and the HR Certification Institute (HRCI). For decades, the two organizations were one. When SHRM decided to start its own series of certifications in 2014, they split. The breakup put aspiring HR leaders in a bind. Both SHRM and HRCI offer junior and senior-level certifications, each with their own requirements and fees. If you’re weighing your options, here’s what you need to know.HRCI Certifications. HRCI manages the HR profession’s longest-standing certification program. The Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification has existed since 1976 and for decades was the industry’s only option.Since parting ways with SHRM, HRCI has added a variety of other certifications, tailored by skillset and geography. The organization even offers a certification for those with experience in California, arguably the state with the most complex compliance requirements. Here’s the full list of offerings:Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR)Professional in Human Resources (PHR)Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR)Professional in Human Resources - California (PHRca)Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR)Professional in Human Resources - International (PHRi)Senior Professional in Human Resources - International (SPHRi)Each of these certifications come with their own requirements, so we’ll cover the two big ones: the PHR and SPHR. After paying the $100 application fee and a separate exam fee, you’ll need to pass a three-hour exam. The exam fee for the PHR and SPHR is $395 and $495, respectively. While both exams cover topics like employee relations, talent acquisition, and compliance, the SPHR focuses heavily on leadership and strategy. The pass rates for both are just under 60%.In addition to passing an exam, you need a certain amount of HR experience to qualify for the PHR and SPHR. These minimums vary depending on your education and the specific certification you’re applying for.PHR Required ExperienceNo bachelor’s degree: 4 yearsBachelor’s degree: 2 yearsGraduate degree: 1 yearSPHR Required ExperienceNo bachelor’s degree: 7 yearsBachelor’s degree: 5 yearsGraduate degree: 4 yearsHRCI certifications need to be renewed every three years. Before that time elapses, you’ll need to either retake the exam or earn 60 recertification credits. These can be earned by attending events, webinars, and other HRCI-sanctioned programs. The rule of thumb is that an hour-long webinar equates to one recertification credit.Here’s one caveat: If you’re renewing your SPHR certification, at least 15 of those credits have to come from content relating to business management or strategy. That same rule applies to HRCI’s more specialized certifications. To renew your PHRca, for example, you’ll need to register for talks, panels, and webinars that relate to California. SHRM Certifications. SHRM is an international HR powerhouse. Founded in 1948, the organization boasts over 300,000 members across 165 countries. In addition to administering its certification program, SHRM regularly holds blockbuster conferences and lobbies on HR’s behalf on Capitol Hill. Although headquartered in Virginia, the organization has hundreds of local chapters around the world.Choosing a SHRM certification is a bit easier since there are just two: the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP. The two abbreviations stand for “certified professional” and “senior certified professional,” respectively. Both certifications require you to pass a four-hour exam and pay a fee ranging from $300 to $475, depending on when you register and if you’re a paying SHRM member. Last year’s pass rates were 70% for the SHRM-CP and 53% for the SHRM-SCP.To qualify for either exam, you’ll need a certain amount of experience. This minimum varies depending on your education. If your degree or equivalent isn’t related to HR, tack on an additional year. To renew your status, you’ll need to either retake the exam or earn 60 “professional development credits” (PDCs). These credits can be earned by attending SHRM-certified conferences, events, and webinars. Generally, an hour-long session is worth one credit. If you’re falling behind, SHRM’s annual expo is a great place to catch up — last year’s event was worth a whopping 27 PDCs.—So which should you choose? Survey data shows that there’s no clear favorite among HR professionals — 16% and 15% are PHR and SHRM-CP certified, respectively. That level of parity is surprising given that SHRM only started offering its certifications in 2014. Choosing between certifications is purely a matter of preference.Whether you’re on team SHRM or HRCI, you’ll need to keep your certification up to date. And which one should you seek? Many senior HR professionals have received certification from the major players: the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the HR Certification Institute (HRCI). Though HRCI created as an extension of SHRM, SHRM stopped offering PHR certification in 2014 and launched its own set of exams. SHRM assigned the majority of its current membership from the standard PHR to this new SHRM certification. Considering then, there has been competition between the two providers, but what is the real difference?  Below the extended details of each certification program: SHRM Certification. SHRM originated in 1948 and had developed into one of the largest human resources organizations in the world. While SHRM offers a mixture of HR services, events, and resources, one of their most ubiquitous offerings is their HR certification program. After its launch, 70% of early to mid-career HR professionals and 56% of senior HR practitioners have passed their particular SHRM certification exams. SHRM offers two Certifications: SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP): For beginning to mid-career HR professionals SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP): For senior-level HR practitioners  When thinking applying to get SHRM certified, keep these features in mind: Exam Details: Both exams grant participants 4 hours to answer a total of 160 questions. Exams are composed of 95 knowledge items and 65 situational judgment items. Accreditation: The exams are approved by The Buros Center for Testing. Exam Fees: SHRM-CP & SHRM-SCP are priced at $300 for SHRM members and $400 for non-members. Recertification: Professionals must recertify every three years by earning 60 SHRM credits during that time. SHRM is a globally recognized organization and gives a thorough guide to certification and a high success rate. HRCI Certification. Early in its existence, SHRM recommended the formation of a task force to establish an HR accreditation program. In 1973, this task force found the ASPA Accreditation Institute (AAI), and in 1976, the first HR exams were administered. The AAI emerged into the HR Certification Institute (HRCI), which now offers seven levels of accreditation to participants worldwide, based on the level of experience. Across the seven tests, the average pass rate is 63%. The Certifications offered by HRCI includes: Professional in Human Resources (PHR) Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR) Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR) Professional in Human Resources - International (PHRi) Professional in Human Resources - California (PHRca) Senior Professional in Human Resources - International Professional (SPHRi) HRCI makes it easy to find the exam that is right for you by listing aspects of HR professionals at each experience level and further by providing an interactive feature to match you to the proper test. These are the distinguishing characteristics of the HRCI certification: Exam Details: Test format varies by certification. Accreditation: The National Commission accredits the exams for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Exam Fees: Depending on test level, base fees range from $350 to $495, plus a $100 application charge for all exams. Recertification: Professionals must recertify every three years by earning 60 recertification credits during that time. The HRCI certifications showcase a much-defined skill set within the HR space. There is a clear pathway to develop your level of accreditation over time in the industry. Should You Get HR Certified? . SHRM and HRCI certification is a great move to add credibility to you’re on the job knowledge, advance your career, and get engaged with the larger HR community. If you’re looking to rise in the field, taking a certification exam can give you credibility and demonstrate your industry knowledge. HRCI is not planning to abandon providing PHR, SPHR, and GPHR exams to allow HR professionals to be certified. With SHRM moving away from those exams, it remains to be seen what the overall impact will be on the marketability over time for those of us with one of the traditional HR certifications. HRCI was running to win in the short term, and SHRM would win in the long term for a few ideas. HRCI has a current list of more than 100,000 certified HR professionals it can market to and try to keep them recertifying. SHRM is working to turn a cruise ship, and that does not happen overnight. What Do the SHRM-CP and PHR Certifications Include? The PHR exam is granted by HRCI and includes some required fields of practice for today’s HR leaders: Human Resource Development (18%) Employee and Labour Relations (20%) Workforce planning and Employment (24%) Risk Management (8%) Compensation and Benefits (19%) Business Management and Strategy (11%) It is necessary to look at the weight of each content area because that is what HRCI PHR Exam judges are the most appropriate areas for early career HR professionals. Workforce planning and employment focus heavily on recruiting and managing workers and the legal aspects surrounding those decisions. The second most massive area is on employee and labor relations. Notwithstanding unions only being present in 10% of U.S. workplaces, this has a heavyweight because it is something that HR must run point on if collective bargaining is required. It is straightforward to see in each area what kinds of content you would expect. In HR Development, you will find material on training and employee growth. In Risk Management, you will find information on safety and security. Alternatively, the SHRM-CP exam is split into many types of capabilities: Leadership: Leadership and exploration, ethical practice Interpersonal: Relationship management, communication, and global/cultural efficiency Business: Business intelligence, consultation, critical evaluation Within each of these areas, we could move on a variety of HR aspects. Instead of being split out by functional area, as HR roles often are at bigger companies, SHRM looks at the HR profession through the lens of a handful of fundamental qualities that each person should have to advance and succeed in the business. Which HR Certification is Better? An Analysis of the SHRM-CP and PHR. When SHRM formed the certifications, they did not necessarily plan them to the two options already on the table intentionally, but when they built their Pathway tool to help presently certified individuals assign their certification to SHRM for free, SHRM very much made it clear that they saw the PHR as equivalent to SHRM-CP and the SPHR equivalent to SHRM-SCP in the nature and quality of the certification. If you want to prove your expertise and mastery of HR-related business law, an understanding of the general thoughts including theories underlying HR, and you work in HR at an organization with under 250 people, the PHR is going to be very beneficial to you. This is because in these roles to know the legal aspects, and the SHRM exam does not cover them entirely. If you want to use the SHRM career resources, learn some intangible aspects of HR like leadership, consulting behaviors, and navigating your career, and you work at a more significant or sophisticated organization, then the SHRM-CP may be a better bet. That is because the bigger the company, the bigger the HR team, and you might not need to be a specialist on HR laws and compliance to excel and move forward. SHRM prides itself on providing competency-based exams, meaning their tests focus on the implementation and application of knowledge on the job. They also offer a membership program with local SHRM chapters, allowing for in-person professional development and networking.  The SHRM model focuses on eight behavioral competencies, grouped into three clusters: leadership, interpersonal, and business. There are two SHRM certifications: SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP). The SHRM-CP is designed for HR professionals with some HR experience who want to establish their career and expand their knowledge. This certification is comparable to the PHR. SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP). The SHRM-SCP is designed for HR professionals with experience and education in HR who want to pursue HR management or leadership. These individuals excel at leading an HR team and aligning HR strategies to big-picture organizational goals. The eligibility requirements for SHRM’s certification courses also vary. Many senior HR professionals have received certification from the major players: the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the HR Certification Institute (HRCI). Though HRCI began as an extension of SHRM, but SHRM stopped offering PHR certification in 2014 and launched its own set of exams. SHRM transferred the majority of its existing membership from the standard PHR to this new SHRM certification. Since then, there has been competition between the two providers, but what’s the real difference? Below we lay out the details of each certification program: SHRM Certification. SHRM originated in 1948 and has evolved into one of the largest human resources organizations in the world. While SHRM offers a variety of HR services, events, and resources, one of their most ubiquitous offerings is their HR certification program. Since its launch, 70% of early to mid-career HR professionals and 56% of senior HR practitioners have passed their respective SHRM certification exams.SHRM offers two certifications: SHRM-CP for early to mid-career HR professionals, and SHRM-SCP for senior-level HR practitioners. When considering applying to get SHRM certified, keep these features in mind: Exam Details: Both exams give participants 4 hours to answer a total of 160 questions. Exams are comprised of 95 knowledge items and 65 situational judgment items. Accreditation: The exams are accredited by The Buros Center for Testing. Exam Fees: SHRM-CP & SHRM-SCP are priced at $300 for SHRM members and $400 for nonmembers. Recertification: Professionals must recertify every three years by earning 60 SHRM credits during that time. SHRM is an internationally recognized organization and offers a thorough guide to certification and a high success rate. Early in its existence, SHRM supported the formation of a task force to establish an HR accreditation program. In 1973, this task force founded the ASPA Accreditation Institute (AAI) and in 1976, the first HR exams were administered. The AAI evolved into the HR Certification Institute (HRCI), which today offers seven levels of accreditation to participants worldwide, based on level of experience. Across the seven tests, the average pass rate is 63%. The certifications offered by HRCI include: Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR) Professional in Human Resources (PHR) Professional in Human Resources - California (PHRca) Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR) Professional in Human Resources - International (PHRi) Senior Professional in Human Resources - International Professional (SPHRi) HRCI makes it simple to find the exam that’s right for you by listing characteristics of HR professionals at each experience level and also by providing an interactive feature to match you to the right test.
