BodyLibraries Plus Start Here FAQs Apply Provide tutoring for children of all ages at booked homework and subject support sessions in local libraries. APPLICATIONS OPEN NOW! Provide tutoring for children of all ages at booked homework and subject support sessions in local libraries. APPLICATIONS OPEN NOW! Central and Portswood Library Various What is Libraries Plus? Libraries Plus is a programme run in Portswood Library and Central Library in which students tutor local pupils aged 6-18 in subjects they need support with. The programme is open access for the community, so children sign up to the sessions in advance in their libraries. This is an excellent programme for volunteers looking for a placement where they can support a wide range of subject areas and children. Placements. We offer a variety of different placements in our local partner libraries at Portswood and Central Library. Placements take place on a Saturday morning and Wednesday afternoon. Skills and employability. This volunteering opportunity is excellent for anyone who wants experience working in schools, with young people and the community, customer service, or is exploring a career in education/youth work. By taking part in Libraries Plus, you will gain skills in: Flexibility, adaptability and time management Academic support, supporting children aged 6-18 and working with children with diverse needs Customer services, liaising with parents and communication Tutoring, behaviour management and leading children's activities Leadership and volunteer management Volunteering commitment. We expect at least one term of volunteering, which typically involves 1-2 hours a week of volunteering during the term, with an induction before your placement starts. Most volunteers continue into semester two, although you may choose to swap placement to a different school or location in the second semester. Training and support. All of our programmes are supported by students and staff. As part of Libraries Plus, you will have sub-committee members, the Libraries Plus Co-ordinator, and the staff team (Catherine Taplin-Thorpe) to speak to. The Coordinator and staff team will be leading on your selection workshop, initial training and additional training provision (eg behaviour management, routes into education etc) throughout your placement, as well as any issues with your school placements. The staff team will be in touch with you during your placement to get mid-year and end of year feedback, which is required from all volunteers. Reasonable adjustments. Libraries Plus is committed to being an inclusive programme, and encourages all students to get involved. We can make reasonable adjustments to application processes, selection workshops, training sessions, your volunteering placement, and other activities on a case-by-case basis. We also provide ongoing support for the students we work with, so if you have particular accessibility needs, including if you want to disclose a disability or special educational needs, please do get in touch with Catherine at [email protected] and let us know how we can make the activity more accessible. Volunteering with Libraries Plus won't cost you. We reimburse all Southampton Hub volunteers' travel expenses, including bus and car travel, throughout the project. Why not volunteer with a friend? Volunteering for Southampton Hub is social and you'll have the chance to meet many like-minded people, but why not ask a friend to sign up with you too? Questions? Email [email protected] who will be able to answer any questions and direct you to the Libraries Plus committee for any further help and support. The authority made the... Southampton City Council has approved plans to shut five libraries in the area unless community groups come forward to run them. The authority made the decision at a cabinet meeting last night (18th August), reported the Daily Echo. The council will stop running Cobbett Road, Burgess Road, Millbrook, Thornhill and Weston libraries next April. Southampton will also close its mobile library as part of the bid to save £286,000. The closures will mean the loss of six jobs. Last week Southampton residents branded their council leisure chief a “disgrace” at a meeting to discuss the closure of six libraries in the area. Conservative finance spokesman John Hannides said closing them would be "probably the most savage and appalling set of proposals we have seen in a generation, it is nothing short of butchery”. While a Labour council member, Cathie McEwing, said she did not understand why the final decision was going just to the cabinet and not the full council for a full debate. However, Labour cabinet member Satvir Kaur, member for communities, culture and leisure, said community groups could take on the libraries to create a “sustainable” future for the service. She also cited successful examples of community-led libraries in Sheffield and Lewisham. Southampton City Councillibraries Related Content. The University currently teaches more than 19,000 students from over 100 countries and offers a range of practical and professional education. Amongst other things the University is home to one of the world’s leading maritime training providers, provides a unique service matching creatives to industry, and has one of the UK’s leading competitive sports programmes. The library opened in its current location in 1994 and can accommodate around 800 students. Southampton City Council says the library at Centenary Quay, Victoria Road, will reopen on Monday at 10am. A council spokesman said: "All other libraries remain open (you can return items to any library) but please check the latest reopening information before visiting. "Please remember to follow our safety guidelines when you visit our libraries. "In line with government guidance, anyone who has Covid-19 symptoms should self-isolate immediately and book a test online or by calling 119." BodySouthampton & Romsey Labour Party This is the Offical Site for Southampton and Romsey Labour Party . Re-opening Southampton City Libraries 4th July, 2020 Southampton Central Library We’re re-opening Southampton City Libraries. Southampton City Libraries are looking forward to welcoming back customers from Monday 6 July 2020, with a phased reopening of services beginning with a select and collect service. Our priority will be staff and customer safety and as such the service offered will be limited; residents will be able to return items and borrow those that they have reserved ahead of visiting. All Council run libraries will initially be open for limited hours on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 12.30pm & 2pm to 4.30pm (with the exception of Lordshill which will open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday) for this collection service. Libraries operated by our community partners are being fully supported by the council and we are working with them to reopen at their own pace. In line with government guidance, the number of customers allowed in a library at any one time will need to be reduced to help people stay safe and maintain social distancing. Hand sanitising, personal protective equipment, and additional cleaning measures will also be in place alongside queue management that you may have experienced elsewhere. To help colleagues work safely, customers will also be asked to ensure they bring their library card with them to use the self-service machines to issue and return their items. Library browsing, public computers, printing facilities, public toilets and other supplementary services will be temporarily unavailable, but this will be reviewed frequently so that they can be offered again as soon as it is safe to do so. We also ask that children under 12 are accompanied by an adult. Customers will be able to reserve items online at www.southampton.gov.uk/libraries or via telephone on 023 8083 3007. Items will be prepared for collection and made available on dedicated shelves. All 6 council run libraries are accepting returns via collection bins located outside, though operating hours for this vary dependant on each library. No overdue fees will be charged until 6 September 2020. During lockdown, our staff have continued to work behind the scenes operating a telephone befriending service and delivering reading materials to some of our more vulnerable residents. We have grown our online offer including access to eBooks and eAudiobooks, family and local history, craft activities and online story and rhyme times which have been welcomed by many of our users. In the coming months many of the events that would normally take place physically in our libraries will continue to be offered digitally. To ensure you don’t miss out, make sure to follow us on social media, @SouthamptonCityLibraries on Facebook and @SotonLibraries on Twitter. Councillor Satvir Kaur, Cabinet Member for Homes, Communities and Culture, said: “Libraries play a such an important part within our local communities. While we have continued an online and home delivery service during lockdown, we know it’s not the same. I’m thrilled we are looking at reopening our library service in a phased way, starting with select and collect. We are also working closely with our community led libraries on their recovery plans. We hope to slowly return our libraries into the community hubs they are known for, while keeping to public health guidance and prioritising the safety of our staff, volunteers and users.” Share — Link to Instagram Link to Twitter Link to YouTube Link to Facebook Link to LinkedIn Link to Snapchat Close Fax Website Location Phone Email Calendar Building Search
